Tine Seed Drills

Disc drills, such as the Pronto DC, Avatar SD and Serto SC, use rotating discs to open a narrow slot with minimal disturbance to the soil around it, which suits precise seed placement across a wide range of soil types, including high residue ground and direct drilling into stubble. Tine drills, like the Sprinter, use tines to loosen and aerate a wider band of soil as they pass, encouraging root development, and are generally a more cost-effective way to establish a crop. Disc drills come into their own where soil disturbance needs to stay minimal, while tine drills suit min-till systems with heavier straw residue.
Direct drilling, also known as no-till, means sowing seed straight into stubble or undisturbed ground without any prior cultivation pass. It helps protect soil structure, retain moisture, and cut establishment time and cost. The Horsch Avatar SD is built specifically for this: its single disc coulter carries up to 350kg of coulter pressure per row, giving consistent seed placement and depth control even without a prepared seedbed. Both are Horsch disc drills, but they're built for different jobs. The Pronto DC uses 46cm discs to prepare the seedbed ahead of its TurboDisc coulters, which sow at a coulter pressure of up to 125kg, and suits conventional or min-till establishment into a lightly worked seedbed. The Avatar SD is a single disc direct drill, built for no-till and mulch seeding straight into stubble or undisturbed ground, with its SingleDisc coulter carrying up to 350kg of coulter pressure per row for consistent placement without any cultivation beforehand. Choose the Pronto DC where some seedbed preparation is part of the plan, and the Avatar SD where you want to drill directly with minimal soil disturbance.
For stony or wet ground, the Avatar SD and Pronto DC are the ones to look at. The Avatar SD's SingleDisc coulter runs on maintenance-free rubber bearings that transfer coulter pressure smoothly and absorb shocks from stones, and its steel closing wheel and Uniformer are built to close the seed furrow cleanly in wet, changeable conditions. The Pronto DC's TurboDisc coulter uses a similar rubber torsion bearing for overload protection and stone shock absorption, and its self-cleaning scraper stops the coulters clogging in sticky, wet conditions.
