Yes, a JCB agricultural telehandler can be driven on UK public roads, provided it's correctly registered, plated and equipped. Here's what needs to be in place:

DVLA registration: The machine needs to be registered and licensed with the DVLA before it goes on the road. Telehandlers used solely for agriculture normally qualify for a nil-rate (tax-exempt) licence, but that licence still has to be applied for and renewed annually, it isn't automatic.

Lighting: Road-going Agri Loadalls need two white lights to the front and two red lights to the rear, both with reflectors and a lit number plate. Machines capable of more than 15mph also need dipped headlights, indicators and hazard warning lights, and those over 25mph need stop lamps too. Site work lights must never be used on the road, JCB's LED road light package is designed with this in mind.

Beacon: An amber flashing beacon is required on machines that can't exceed 25mph when used on an unrestricted dual carriageway, mounted at least 1.2m above the ground. It's a standard option across the Agri Loadall range.

Licence requirements: What licence the driver needs depends on the machine's weight. A standard car (category B) licence covers telehandlers up to 3.5 tonnes from age 17. Between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes, a category C1 licence is needed from age 18, and above 7.5 tonnes, a category C licence is needed from age 21. Most of the compact Agri Loadall range sits under 3.5 tonnes, while the mid and high-capacity models generally run from around 7.3 tonnes upwards, so it's worth checking the specific model's weight before assuming which licence applies.

Fuel: Agri Loadalls used off-road and for travel between parts of the same farm can generally run on rebated ('red') diesel. If the machine is used for on-road haulage or other non-agricultural work, standard road diesel and the appropriate rate of vehicle tax apply. HMRC's rules here are specific to how the machine is used, so it's worth checking current guidance or speaking to your accountant if you're unsure.

Speed and towing: Most Agri Loadalls are limited to 40kph (25mph), with the DualTech Variable Transmission's High Speed option reaching 50kph (around 31mph) on selected models. If you're towing, the trailer and its brakes need to be matched to the combination weight. Our Series III range offers braked trailer options (hydraulic or air, depending on trim) built for this.

Roadworthiness rules apply at all times, whatever the machine's tax or registration status.

JCB Agri Loadalls offer up to four transmission options, depending on model and trim level, each suited to different types of farm work.

TorqueLock 4-speed Powershift (AGRI trim): a straightforward four-speed powershift gearbox with TorqueLock locking out the torque converter in top gear. It's simple, robust and efficient for general loader work and road travel.

4-speed Powershift (AGRI SUPER trim): the same reliable four-speed powershift transmission, paired with the extra power of the SUPER trim engine, useful where a bit more pulling power is needed without added transmission complexity.

Autoshift 6-speed (AGRI XTRA trim): a six-speed powershift gearbox with automatic and manual shift modes, and TorqueLock in 5th and 6th gear. The extra ratios and automatic changes reduce driver fatigue on longer road runs and give smoother power delivery when working.

DualTech Variable Transmission (option on AGRI SUPER, AGRI XTRA and AGRI PRO): JCB's award-winning DualTech VT combines hydrostatic drive with a three-speed direct-drive mechanical powershift gearbox, switching seamlessly between the two through Flexi mode. Hydrostatic drive gives fine, creeping control for precise, low-speed work such as muck-out or livestock handling, while the mechanical drive takes over for efficient higher-speed travel, up to 40kph as standard, or 50kph with the High Speed DualTech VT option on selected models. The result is one transmission that's as comfortable easing into a cattle shed as it is covering ground between fields.

The 525-60E is JCB's first fully electric agricultural telehandler, part of the wider JCB E-TECH range, and it's built to match a conventional diesel Loadall on performance, not just on paper.

Lift capacity and reach: The 525-60E lifts 2,500kg to a height of 6.0m, the same figures as its diesel equivalent, the 525-60 AGRI PLUS. There's no throttling of lift performance to preserve battery power, it works exactly as a conventional telehandler would.

Zero emissions: With no exhaust at the point of use, the 525-60E suits enclosed spaces such as livestock buildings, and any site where air quality matters.

Noise: Sound levels are significantly lower than a diesel machine, at 71dB(A) at the operator's ear and 93.6dB(A) externally. That makes it a good fit for early morning or late-evening jobs around livestock, work close to neighbouring properties, or any task where a quieter machine genuinely helps rather than just being a nice-to-have.

Battery and charging: Power comes from a 24kWh lithium-ion battery, giving an average working shift on a single charge (this varies with ambient temperature and duty cycle). The on-board charger runs from a standard 240V/16A supply, taking around 5 hours for a 25–80% charge or 8 hours for a full charge, well suited to overnight charging in the yard. Where a faster turnaround is needed, an optional 18kW rapid charger (415V/32A) brings the battery from 25–80% in around an hour, or to a full charge in under two.

The 525-60E also comes with JCB LiveLink telematics as standard, giving real-time data on location, usage and servicing needs, alongside the lower running costs that come with maintenance-free batteries and less frequent servicing.

A telehandler and a tractor loader can do similar jobs, but the way a Loadall is built gives it some real advantages for farm work.

Central boom placement: A telehandler's boom sits centrally between the wheels, rather than mounted out in front like a tractor loader. That keeps the machine's weight better balanced when lifting and gives the operator a clearer view of the load and what's around it, particularly useful when working close to buildings, livestock or other machinery.

Four-wheel steering: Loadalls offer multiple steer modes, front-wheel, all-wheel (four-wheel) and crab steer, giving far tighter manoeuvrability in confined yards and sheds than a tractor's front-wheel steering allows.

Telescopic reach: This is the biggest practical difference. A tractor loader's arms move through a fixed arc, so the machine has to be repositioned to change the height or distance of a load. A telehandler's boom extends and retracts as well as lifts, reaching up and out from a single position, useful for stacking bales three or four high, loading over the side of a trailer, or reaching into the back of a building without shunting the machine back and forth.

Specialised attachments: With a quick-hitch carriage, a Loadall can swap between buckets, pallet forks, bale spikes, grabs and other attachments in moments, turning one machine into several tools for the day. A tractor loader is generally limited to whatever's fitted to the loader arm.
