Meet Ben Fleming: Building His Future with A Scot Agri Apprenticeship
We recently caught up with Ben Fleming, a third-year Apprentice Engineer based at our Perth depot, to hear about his experience as a Scot Agri Apprentice – from what inspired him to apply, to how the role has shaped his future goals.
A Natural Fit for a Career in Agriculture
Ben’s interest in agriculture started early. After his family bought a small holding, he found himself increasingly drawn to both the agricultural lifestyle and the mechanical side of things, often working alongside his dad. So, when it came to choosing a career path after school, the Scot Agri Apprenticeship stood out as the perfect balance.
‘I’ve always been interested in farming, and I’d done a bit of mechanical work too,’ Ben explained. ‘Getting paid while learning felt like the best of both worlds compared to other options.’
Ben first came across the apprenticeship through Scot Agri’s social media, and with his dad already working in the industry, it felt like a natural step.
Developing Skills and Confidence
When asked about the biggest skill he’s gained, Ben didn’t hesitate: problem solving!
‘In my first year, I was mainly shadowing someone. But now I’ve got my own van, I’m doing bigger jobs and thinking through things myself,’ he shared. ‘It’s challenging at times, but it’s good.’
With more responsibility has come more independence, and Ben has found himself increasingly confident when working onsite and making decisions on the job.
Scot Agri’s Supportive Teams and Positive Work Environment
Ben describes the team at our Perth Depot as a friendly, tight-knit group who have made him feel comfortable and supported from the moment he started his apprenticeship.
‘We’re all similar ages – it’s a good team. There’s plenty of banter and everyone helps each other out,’ he said. ‘If I need a hand, someone is always there to help.’
Ben emphasised how valuable it has been to be surrounded by work colleagues who have created a learning environment where no question is too small, and no one is ever left to struggle. Whether it’s learning by observing more experienced engineers or receiving advice and guidance during a challenging repair, he’s always surrounded by people willing to help and support him.
Beyond the workshop, Ben appreciates the wider support at Scot Agri. From HR to IT, Scot Agri is a workplace where he feels supported and able to ask questions.
A Day in the Life at the Perth Depot
Ben’s day typically starts around 7:30am, catching up with the team and planning his day. He often starts by tidying the workshop, finishing off any jobs left from the previous day, or preparing equipment for upcoming farm visits.
By 8am, Ben checks in with his supervisor to review jobs. Depending on the schedule, he might service machinery in the workshop or head out to a farm to carry out on-site repairs.
‘When I’m heading out, I gather all the tools, oils, and parts I need. You often have to think on your feet if something unexpected comes up,’ Ben says.
Lunch provides a chance to catch up with colleagues. Afternoons are often a mix of completing jobs, helping teammates, and tidying up the workshop for the next day. ‘Every day is different – you’re always learning something new,’ he adds.
Favourite Part of the Job? Being Out on the Farm
For Ben, the best part of the role is being out on farms, meeting farmers, and working with a variety of machinery.
‘I definitely like being out and about meeting farmers, speaking to customers, and working in the scenery.’
The apprenticeship has helped Ben understand what he enjoys most – combining hands-on work with machinery and engaging with Scot Agri customers. It has built his confidence and given him a clear idea of the type of role he wants after qualifying. Ben’s goals are constantly evolving alongside his role and strives to be the best apprentice he can be.
Ben’s Advice for Future Apprentices
‘It’s a great choice, definitely do it. It’s hard work, but worth it in the end. You’ll meet loads of people – customers, colleagues and other Scot Agri apprentices.’
Applications for our next apprenticeship intake are opening soon, and we’d love to hear from anyone ready to take the same rewarding step Ben did. If you’re looking to build your skills, gain real experience, and join a supportive team, be sure to apply through the Careers section of our website!
