When it comes to cutting-edge technology, Massey Ferguson stands proudly alongside the best in the industry. Always pushing boundaries, Massey continues to deliver innovative solutions that make life easier and more efficient for operators in the field.

One of the standout pieces of technology Massey Ferguson has introduced recently is the MF AutoHeadland Control system. This system is a game-changer for precision farming, designed to streamline operations and maximize efficiency.

What is MF AutoHeadland Control?

The Auto Headland Control system automates turning at the headlands with exceptional accuracy. For this system to work, your Massey Ferguson tractor must be equipped with MF Guide - the company’s guidance platform, compatible with both Trimble and Novatel receivers.

To unlock the full potential of AutoHeadland Control, it’s ideal to have a Massey Ferguson “Exclusive” spec tractor. Why? Because the exclusive spec includes electronically controlled hydraulic remotes. While this isn’t essential, having fully electronic control allows the system to seamlessly manage all headland functions and enables AutoTurn, which fully automates the process.

MF AutoHeadland in Action

Let’s break this down with a practical example!

We’re using a Massey Ferguson 7S.210 Exclusive spec tractor, fitted with a Novatel receiver and unlocked for AutoHeadland Turn. The system is running RTK guidance, offering pinpoint accuracy of just 2 cm pass-to-pass.

  • Implements: On the rear, we have a 4m Horsch KR drill, and on the front, a Horsch Partner 2800 hopper.
  • Setup: Through the Datatronic 5 screen, we can fully configure the Horsch drill directly via the tractor terminal. Modern Horsch drills are designed to integrate with the tractor’s onboard system, automatically pulling in key measurements, saving valuable setup time.

Headland Management Sequence

Here’s how we typically program the headland cycle:

  1. Engage auto-steer
  2. Lower the front hopper
  3. Increase engine revs
  4. Lower the rear linkage
  5. Engage the PTO
  6. Drop the marker
  7. Set cruise control

When leaving the headland, the system automatically reverses the sequence.

Seeding with Precision

Once the field boundary is recorded, we can easily program the system to set four headland passes (or more, depending on preference). With the “run-skip” function enabled, the system will lift the drill at the fourth headland pass, automatically turn the tractor, and line it up precisely on the next straight AB line - all hands-free, all with 2 cm accuracy.

Why Does This Matter?

Some might see this as just another fancy gadget, but the benefits are real:

  • Perfectly consistent turns every time, increasing operational efficiency.
  • Reduced soil compaction at field edges by eliminating unnecessary shunting and repositioning.
  • Significant time savings - consider how many turns a tractor makes in a day, and how much time is wasted lining up manually.
  • Fuel savings from smoother, more efficient operations.
