Building a Future in Agriculture: Meet First-Year Apprentice Jack Greig
For many Apprentices, a passion for agriculture starts at home, and that’s certainly true for Jack Greig, a first-year apprentice engineer based at our Huntly depot. Raised on his family farm and surrounded by Massey Ferguson machinery from a young age, Jack knew he wanted to build a career in agriculture.
Why Jack Chose Scot Agri
Jack’s agricultural background and early experience around machinery made Scot Agri an obvious fit for him. Already knowing a Huntly Engineer, Jack knew he would be joining a supportive, welcoming depot. ‘I was keen to join Scot Agri,’ he said, recognising the company’s reputation and the opportunities it provides young apprentices.
A Typical Day for Jack
Jack’s days are a mix of workshop learning and time out on the road. Between his studies at the Barony College in Dumfries, he spends time at Huntly working alongside experienced engineers, carrying out servicing, repairs and diagnostics. One of his favourite parts of the job is getting out in the van, visiting different farms and new areas. ‘You get to see parts of the country you wouldn’t typically see,’ he shared – one of the unique perks of being an engineer.
Jack particularly enjoys working on electrics, a skill he’s developed far more than he expected. His apprenticeship has also helped him build people skills, from communicating with customers to working closely with the depot team.
Learning in a Supportive Team
One thing Jack values most at Scot Agri is the team environment. From day one, he felt welcomed and encouraged to ask questions when needed. ‘Everyone is really helpful,’ he shared, emphasising how much he’s learned so far from the Huntly engineers.
The depot is known for its friendly, positive atmosphere, and Jack says that even the busiest days are made enjoyable by the team. ‘Everyone is up for a laugh, the hard work is made fun, and everyone gets along!’
Looking Ahead
Jack sees his apprenticeship as a good foundation for a job in agriculture. The blend of hands-on experience, college study, manufacturer training and support from the Huntly team has shaped his ambitions for the future.
As Jack continues through his apprenticeship, he’s steadily building the experience and confidence needed to take on more responsibility. His goal is clear: to become a skilled, time-served engineer with his own van, capable of tackling any repair or job that comes his way. And with time, he’s even open to progressing into a foreman role.
