From Workshop to Farm: Ryan Hendry’s Scot Agri Apprenticeship Journey
We caught up with Ryan Hendry, a fourth-year apprentice at our Huntly Depot, to hear about his experience as a Scot Agri apprentice. With prior experience working part-time at another machinery dealer, Ryan saw the Scot Agri Apprenticeship programme as a chance to gain permanent, structured experience working with a variety of world-renowned agricultural brands, including JCB, Horsch and Massey Ferguson.
Why Scot Agri?
Ryan was drawn to Scot Agri as it felt like a good fit for his career goals. ‘It seemed like a good company to work for, and the job was exactly what I was looking for,’ he explained. He first heard about the apprenticeship programme on social media and was motivated by the opportunity to gain hands-on experience while working towards a qualification.
Life at Scot Agri Huntly
When asked about a typical day as a Scot Agri apprentice, Ryan described the variety his role offers. Some days he heads straight to a customer farm, while others involve preparing and loading his van or working in the workshop. ‘Most of the time I’m out on the road, hardly ever in the depot, which keeps things interesting,’ he said. Ryan particularly enjoys the problem-solving aspect of his job, often having to think on his feet when working in remote locations with no phone reception.
Learning From a Supportive Team
Ryan emphasised the support he receives from the Huntly team, describing the depot as a collaborative and welcoming environment. ‘Everyone’s happy to help, and the company makes sure we’ve got the best tools and facilities to work with,’ he shared. This support has been vital to Ryan, helping him grow in confidence and develop the skills needed to handle jobs independently as a fourth-year apprentice.
Hands-On Learning
Throughout his apprenticeship, Ryan has gained practical experience and learned essential technical skills. He values the chance to learn directly from experienced colleagues and appreciates the opportunities to apply that knowledge on real jobs.
At Scot Agri, Ryan works with numerous machinery brands and enjoys the various manufacturer training courses from the likes of JCB and Massey Ferguson, providing him with broad technical knowledge for real-life, on-the-job challenges.
Looking Ahead: A Future Engineer
Ryan’s future goal is simple: to continue improving as a mechanic. ‘I like the job I’m doing, and I just want to get better at it,’ he said. His advice for anyone considering a Scot Agri apprenticeship is just as straightforward: ‘Just do it. It’s a great place to work, you won’t regret it!’
